본인의 영문 이름이 James이기도 한 Jimmy Strain의 이름은, 그가 존경하는 세명의 Jimmy에게서 따온 것입니다. 그들은 James Hetfield(Metallica), Jimmy Page(Led Zeppelin), Jim Morrison(The Doors)입니다. Strain은 곡,선율,시,노래를 의미하며, 또한 '노력하다, 애쓰다'는 뜻도 있습니다.

지미 스트레인은 중학교 재학시절 독학으로 기타를 배워, 고등학교 때 송라이팅을 시작했습니다. 2006년 서울 종합예술학교 음악 페스티발에 자작곡으로 참가하여 한국 연예 제작자 협회상을 수상하고, 이듬해 짧은 연주EP를 발표한 후, 서울시가 주최하는 “하이! 서울 페스티발”에 참가, 작곡과 라이브 연주로 메인 및 서브 스테이지에 올랐습니다. 그리고 그것을 마지막으로 모든 외부 행사를 그만두고, 본인이 오랫동안 꿈꿔왔던 원맨 헤비메틀 밴드를 시작했습니다.

과연 근자에 들어 우리의 언더그라운드 음악 씬에서 이런 당돌(?!)하며 의욕 넘치는 원맨 밴드가 있었는가 다시 한번 생각을 해본다.

지상파 TV를 돌려 보거나, 말만 FM인 라디오 프로그램 채널을 바꿔 보아도 거의 비슷한 형식의 너무 뻔한 노래들만 일방적인 칭찬을 달아 그 어떤 책임감도 없이 쏟아내는 작금의 대한민국 대중음악 씬에서 앞뒤 재지 않고 이런 시도를 한다는 것은 아마도 열정이 넘치거나 아니면 막말로 세상물정 몰라서 그런다고 오해받기 십상이다.

후크송, 막춤, 아이돌, 표절 논란, 획일화 등 우리 대중음악계만 생각하면 어이없고 갑갑해지는 이 시기에 정말 미래지향적인 아티스트적 스타일과 음악적 양심과 가치를 마음껏 시도한 이 앨범은 막힌 곳을 풀어주는 소화제이자 홧병을 치료해 주는 명약 같다는 생각은 과연 억지일까?!...."

" 디지털 싱글, 미니앨범의 홍수 속에서 앨범을 내주는 것만으로도 감사한 게 요즘 대중음악계의 현실이다. 그냥 앨범도 아니고 컨셉앨범을 낼 생각을 하다니. 지미 스트레인은 확실히 대중가요계에서는 찾아보기 힘든, 큰 스케일을 지닌 작가다.

겉으로 표현하지는 않았지만 사실 지미 스트레인의 분노는 한심한 대중가요계의 현실과 무관하지 않은 것으로 보인다. 하지만 그 분노를 뭐든지 다 부수고 말겠다는 방향성 없는 폭력으로 분출하는 대신 자기 예술에 대해 엄청난 집중력과 열정으로 전환시키고 있는 것이 지미 스트레인을 다른 작가들과 구분해주는 지점이 아닌가 생각한다. 유흥을 위한 3분짜리 가요에 적지 않은 대중들이 지쳐간다. 시대착오적으로 보일 정도로 우직하고 순수한 아티스트를 아직도 사람들은 기다린다. 음악에 대한 순수한 열정과 마르지 않는 음악적 아이디어로 무장한 지미 스트레인은 그래서 반가운 존재다. 이제 지미 스트레인의 감성 주파수가 더욱 뻗어나가 대중들과 교감할 일만 남았다. 진심은 언젠가 통하는 법이다. 설령 시대착오적인 진심일지라도 말이다. Jimmy Strain is a self-taught guitarist who began to play the guitar as a junior high school student and became a songwriter during high school years. He was first recognized by winning the Korea Entertainment Producers Association Award in the Seoul Art College Music Festival in 2006, with his original composition. Early next year, he made an EP containing six songs in which he experimented with various recording techniques and instruments such as MIDI-guitar by which he could produce and record the sound of piano, saxophone and percussions.

A few months later, he composed a song for the Seoul City sponsored 'Hi! Seoul Festival' and performed on the main stage and sub-stages, leading a group of musicians. During the festival, the group improvised on an extended version of his song, which was almost three times longer than the original, for dancers who danced to the music. After his successful performance at 'Hi! Seoul Festival,' Jimmy didn't perform in public.

Jimmy started making his long awaited rock'n'roll numbers into a heavy metal record entitled 'Emotion Frequency'. As he created some techno music back in 2000, he dreamed of a rock band in which one man composes, performs and records a whole album without employing any session musicians. Just like the EP he had produced before, he composed, played and recorded all the instruments and did the mixing. Not only that, he also sang this time.

He never lived or studied abroad but he wrote verses in English, talking about his personal thoughts about human beings and issues of the world and Korea. His experiment of putting emotional melodies of such famous Korean folk songs as 'Jindo Arirang' and 'Sae Taryong' into his music turned out to be a great success.

After almost a year's hard work, he released prototype of this record for promotional purpose. Even though the audio quality of the prototype was not too satisfactory, it garnered favorable comments and reviews from listeners and critics. For instance, 'Pieces of me' and 'Savior' ranked 66th and 71st most popular songs on "Sound Click," the musical website with over 3.4 million members worldwide.

In the autumn of 2008, he started his next project and re-mastering of the prototype record, and in March 2009, the re-mastered version of 'Emotion Frequency' was finally released. He is now working on his next record, something even more progressive.
